Spotlight on careers in Pharmacy
Celebrating Pharmacy teams - World Pharmacist Day & World Pharmacy Technician Day
As we mark World Pharmacist Day (25 September World Pharmacists Day - FIP - International Pharmaceutical Federation) and World Pharmacy Technician Day (21 October Pharmacy Technician Day - PTCB), it's time to shine a spotlight on these dedicated healthcare professionals who play a vital role in keeping our communities healthy and safe.
Pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are often the first point of contact for patients seeking healthcare advice. They are experts in medicines, ensuring that prescriptions are accurate, safe, and effective. Beyond dispensing, pharmacists provide clinical services such as medication reviews, vaccinations, and support for long-term conditions. Pharmacy technicians are essential in preparing, supplying medicines and person-centred services. Here in Bristol, North Somerset and South Glos we have pharmacists and pharmacy technicians working within hospitals, community (or high street) pharmacy, GP practices, health and justice setting and the ambulance service.
Pathways into Pharmacy Careers
If you're inspired by the impact these professionals make, there are several routes into the pharmacy workforce:
- Pharmacist: To become a pharmacist in the UK, you’ll need to complete a Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) degree accredited by the General Pharmaceutical Council (GPhC), followed by a foundation training year and registration with the GPhC.
- Pharmacy Technician: This role typically requires completion of a GPhC-approved Level 3 qualification in pharmacy services, often undertaken as part of an apprenticeship. Pharmacy technicians are registered professionals and have increasing responsibilities in clinical and operational areas.
Both roles offer opportunities for progression, specialisation, and leadership. Whether working in hospitals, community pharmacies, GP practices, or industry, pharmacy professionals are at the heart of patient care.
A Future-Focused Profession
As healthcare evolves, so does pharmacy. Digital innovations, integrated care systems, and expanding clinical roles mean pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are more vital than ever. Their expertise supports safer prescribing, better use of medicines, and more personalised care.
This World Pharmacist Day and World Pharmacy Technician Day, let’s celebrate their dedication, compassion, and expertise.
